History of the East Clinton Fire District
Formation of the Fire District:
In 1937, under the authority of New York State's Town Law statutes (TWN Article 11), the Clinton Town Board established the East Clinton Fire District. This creation marked a pivotal step in organizing and formalizing fire protection services for the community.
The East Clinton Fire District is a recognized political subdivision of the State of New York, governed by a Board of five Fire Commissioners. These Commissioners are elected by the residents of the Fire District, with each Commissioner serving a five-year term. This staggered election process ensures continuity and experience within the Board, with one Commissioner elected annually on the second Tuesday of December. In instances where a vacancy arises, the Board holds the authority to appoint an individual to fill the position temporarily.
The Fire District is entrusted with numerous statutory responsibilities, the foremost being the levying of taxes to provide fire protection services to its residents. The District's budget funds the East Clinton Volunteer Fire Department, supporting essential needs such as equipment, apparatus, training, and the day-to-day operations. Additionally, the budget covers the maintenance and repair of District facilities and other specialized needs, ensuring that the fire department remains fully equipped and prepared to serve the community.
The Evolution of the Fire Department:
The East Clinton Volunteer Fire Department, which predates the Fire District, was organized in 1931. In its early years, the department operated with a strong sense of community spirit, raising funds to purchase their first fire truck and renting a garage that still stands in the village today. Recognizing the importance of fire protection beyond the immediate vicinity, the department expanded its coverage area in 1935, extending four miles into neighboring towns. This proactive approach highlighted the department's commitment to serving a broader community, laying the foundation for the formal creation of the Fire District two years later.
Through the decades, the East Clinton Fire District and its Volunteer Fire Department have evolved, adapting to the changing needs of the community while maintaining a steadfast commitment to service. The collaborative efforts of the Fire District and the Volunteer Fire Department ensure that residents receive the highest level of fire protection, preserving life and property with professionalism and dedication.
